How To Dim Led Lights Without A Dimmer

4 Answers 4

They're called cinematic gels

They are but a greyness filter that you put over the LED. Y'all can also get color-tinted, if you are trying to white-residue with other lights.

But a light one, and if you demand more than dimming, add together layers.

You might consider a dimmer switch that has a "slider" that is separated from the switch. This would be completely code legal, give you the convenience of setting the dimming level one time and then only use the switch. You'd too have the flexibility to adjust it hands if your needs change. Just brand sure any dimmer you choose is uniform with your LEDs. dimmer with slider

As well series resistors and gels/foils a series X2 capacitor could also assistance without wasting energy and extending the mean time betwixt failures of the LED bulbs. These mostly rectangular yellow capacitors can exist hands harvested from junk electronics at domicile or from the side by side recycling yard and can be located nigh where the power cable enters the junk device. Trying some values around 100 to 1000nF similar 220nF or 330nF should dim the bulbs. The lower the value, the lower the brightness. These X2 capacities are very safe. In example of using series resistors they should be also explicitly suited for this application (flameproofed, voltageproofed). Of course all safe requirements must be met, i important is that the series elements must be inside an insulating housing that can just exist opened with tools. Both ends of the series resistor or capacitor can have the total line voltage.

  • Xeeka, you must exist pretty clever when it comes to electronics, only most people are non. For a newbie to follow your communication could be quite dangerous. And I'yard pretty sure most of what y'all are suggesting isn't code legal. Let's go on it safe out at that place!

  • @GeorgeAnderson Of form prophylactic commencement! My answers are frequently focused on safety - and free energy saving. One large part of my motivation to answer hither was the bare very curt comment to "add a serial resistor". Then I added the alternate method with an X2 cap (which in full general is more safety since no existent power/estrus is involved) and clearly mentioned the condom aspects. In general my answers always accept the rubber into account - regarding others' statements and even where local codes seem to have important insufficiencies.

  • Tin can you link any capacitors that are UL-Listed (RU-Recognized won't cut it) and whose instructions say to use them straight in mains wiring? That is a prerequisite to using in mains wiring NEC 110.2 and 110.3(B). Simply such product I'1000 aware of, the LUT-MLC, but that's non listed for series employ.

  • @Harper-ReinstateMonica The class X2 is already indicating that qualification for mains usage - and is printed on the cap. Here you may detect those condom capacitors with qualifications similar ENEC, UL, cUL, CQC: uk.farnell.com/c/passive-components/capacitors/film-capacitors/… The serial usage is not explicitly mentioned - virtually likely because the qualification for parallel use would automatically encompass the series use, if the device is curt cutting or has a big insurge current or has a very big wattage thus depression resistance.

  • Yep that's the difference betwixt UL the visitor, and UL the listing. Dissimilarity that cap with the LUT-MLC, which has a patently visible c-UL-the states marker and whose UL-canonical docs apparently state what information technology is to be used for, and how to install it. Yous must install it co-ordinate to instructions. Farther, note the device provides terminations compatible with NEC 3.xx wiring methods.
